By E. bay
I bought this a couple of weeks ago and I just love it. With a small amp and speaker it has the sound of a huge stand up bass. It's so easy to play it's ridiculous. I bought a stand up bass years ago and sold it because it was just too hard to play and took up too much room. This has been wonderful. If I continue to improve though, I may sell this one and get a better quality one. This is excellent for the money, though, and I'm really glad I bought it. It's a good starter model. Not a bad finish model either.

By Michael J. Edelman
I fell in love with the Kala after seeing one, and after seeing a number of performances on YouTube by Kala players. Yes, it looks like a novelty item, but it's really a serious instrument. It doesn't have the sound or resonance of a larger instrument, but it has a very good sound, and what really makes it great is the portability. This is a bass that fits in the upright storage compartment of an airliner. If you've ever played an Ashbory bass, this plays better, tunes easier, the strings last longer, and it had a better tone. Unlike the Ashbory, you can actually play it unplugged. It's not loud enough to keep up with other instruments, but it's plenty loud enough for practice, making it a great instrument for practice on the road or late at night.
$450 may sound like a lot for such a tiny instrument, but the build quality is very high here. The top is solid spruce, the body has an attractive and well done 5-layer binding on the top, and the headstock has an inlaid "Kala" as well as a multi-colored frog logo in what looks like mother-of-pearl. The fingerboard inlays are very cleanly done, though I find that just looking at the side dots works better for me. The whole thing has the feeling of solidity and quality.
I was torn between the fretted and fretless versions, I play upright and fretless bass, but I've also heard upright players say that the frets really help on a scale this short. I went back and forth, but finally decided on the fretless model, and I'm glad I did. It's not at all difficult to adapt to the short scale if you'e already used to switching between upright and fretless bass guitar. While intonation may be more difficult initially, in the end it's more accurate. A fretted instrument is always going to be a bit of a compromise when it comes to intonation. I'm told that the Thunderguts don't play in tune on the fretted models, and I'd like to try a set on my U-bass. I was also a bit torn between the hollow body and the solid body models. The solid bodies have a cutaway, but the advantage of being able to play unplugged finally made be decide in favor of the hollow body. I was also tempted by the more expensive mahogany bodied model, which I've read has a woodier, more upright like tone, but price was a factor. As it is, I'm perfectly happy with this model.

Sounds Like an Upright; Plays like an Elect. with some
minor finger adjustments (L-Hand:more Tip/less Pad;
RH:Soften Attack) or an EQ/Compessor/Limiter to eliminate
some high-end "white-noise" piezo buzz. Has "Sufficent"
(depends on style/genre) Unplugged Vol. & Great Practice Tool.
